iphone wants to use built in mic and not line in

I have a jack to convert 1/4" to mini, so I can plug my guitar directly into the phone; however, when I try to record using either 'audio recorder' or 'amp', GarageBand records through my phone mic. How do I turn off the phone mic for this (guitar) track?
